Calcots Barcelona BBQ season

It’s calçots season once more in Catalonia, which means a couple delicious months of barbequing green onions in the countryside.

A calçot is a sort of long green onion which is nice and fat in February and March – so right now! The tradition is to go to a masia, or country farmhouse restaurant where they char these onions by the ton on the BBQ, but you can get them sometimes also in restaurants.

The process of eating is a bit messy as Calçot eaters must first peel the onions (the outer layers are black and burned of the fire) and then dip them in red romesco sauce, which is very delicious and made of red pepers, almonds etc..

Desigual – one of Barcelonas most famous fashion brands

The brands history leads back to 1981, when a 20-year-old Swiss designer called Thomas Meyer spent his summers making T-shirts in Ibiza. He had opened a second hand shop by the port which brought a lot of tourist in contact with the brand and made it already back then known internationally. One season, Thomas Meyer had a lot of jeans left over and used them to create jackets. People started to buy them and take them back home all over Europe. After two successful seasons the collection was named Desigual in 1984, using a mould-breaking logo with two naked figures and the slogan “Desigual is not the same” created by the Spanish film director Isabel Coixet. She was working in advertising at the time and was a friend of the founder. The current logo with the inverted “s” is by designer Frederick Thomas.

The brand is about spontaneity, positive feeling and unconventional creation. It’s closely linked to an unstructured approach to life and seeing things from a new angle, hence the inversion of the “s”. The designs break with convention and try to show the bright side to life. The head office and logisitcs centre is now based in Barcelona. Thomas Meyer is still the driving force and heads up the creative team.

See Desiguals website for more details and impressions of the latest collection.

Come to Barcelona to get the newest spring trends and stay in an apartment in the gothic quarter to reach all shops within walking distance.

Carnival in Barcelona: Sitges

From the 19th till the 25th of February Carnival will be celebrated. The most spectacular place to celebrate carnival is Sitges.

Jueves Lardero or Fat Tuesday marks the beginning of carnival with a huge celebration of local dishes and the arrival of the King of the Carnestoltes. A big parade will cross the city which will be packed with locals and lots of tourists.

Sitges is a party town and carnival is the party of all parties ( The gay carnival starts already 4 days earlier.)! Discotheques organize special theme parties like La noche rosa ( Pink night), Noche de las mantillas, Noche de las touristas ( tourist night) and Noche de las viudas ( Widows night).

The festivities end with the Burial of a Sardine on Ash Wednesday ( the 25th of February).

Carnival fans who want to celebrate this big event can travel easily by train from Barcelona to Sitges. Recommended is to take the last train, party all night and to take the first train back to rest during the day in your apartment in Barcelona.
