Saint Just and Pastor ’s church Barcelona Gotic area

Published by admin under What to visit in Barcelona

Sant Just Barcelona apartment for rent  sant-just-2.jpg Saint Just and Pastor’s chuch
Plaça Sant Just 6

Barcelona  08002   Metro : Jaume

From the Plaza de la Generalitat, the tourist information is on the corner,  go down carrer de la ciutat and take the first street on the left, the carrer Hercules (name from the mythical founder of Barcelona). At the end you will find this church.

This is one of the oldest churches (3rd century) in Barcelona and is dedicated to the two martyrs, Justo and Pastor, who were the subjects of veneration during the 4th century. However, much of the building is part of the later Visigothic construction. Back in the days of Ramón Berenguer ‘el Viejo’ (11th century), this parish church was used as a cathedral while the Romanesque cathedral was being built. The 14th century Gothic building work is typical of the church architecture of the time. Relics belonging to both saints are kept in a small chest from the cathedral of Narbonne donated by Jaume I’s wife.
Christian catacombs are reported to have been found beneath Plaça Sant Just. The Gothic fountain was built in 1367 by famed Barcelona councilman Joan Fiveller. Fiveller had discovered a spring in the Collserola hills and had the water piped straight to Barcelona. The fountain bears an image of St. Just and city and sovereign count-kings’ coats of arms, along with a pair of falcons. The excellent entryway and courtyard to the left of Carrer Bisbe Caçador is the Palau Moixó, the town house of an important early Barcelona family, while down Carrer Bisbe Caçador is the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres, the Catalan Arts and Letters Academy. The church is dedicated to the boy martyrs Just and Pastor; the Latin inscription over the door translates into English almost in reverse syntax as “Our pious patron is the black and beautiful Virgin, together with the sainted children Just and Pastore.”

The chocolate museum in Barcelona

This small, unique Museum portrays the history of chocolate complete with sculptures such as a huge chocolate carriage with horses.  You can watch pastry makers at work in the Barcelona Patisseria School across the courtyard.  The friendly staff in the café/store will give you advice on which chocolate goes best with champagne.  Of course, candy is available from chocolate covered almonds that look like rocks to lollypops with burros.  Or make up a gift basket stocked with chocolate and orange marmalade and even chocolate wine.

The expiatory temple of the Holy Family or Sagrada Familia from Gaudi Barcelona

sagrada-familia-2.jpgsagrada-familia-1.jpg

The New entrance door of the Sagrada Familia … the Passion.

You can see why it is called the Expiatory Temple ….  emaciated figures of Christ being flogged and on the crucifix …the work of  Josep Maria Subirachs.
It is the west facade , the Passion; the East facade is called the Nativity and is Gaudi’s work.

The architect of the Sagrada Familia , Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926 ) worked with his faith in God. Since 2003, the Catholic Chuch is considering Gaudi becoming a holy Saint.

Escape the busy city and visit park de labyrinth in Barcelona

The buzz of the city makes it sometimes necessary to escape and search for some tranquility. There are some parks all over Barcelona, but unfortunately most of them are pretty crowded too. A hidden jewel and a very tranquil park is the Labyrinth’ Park which is probably the oldest garden in Barcelona, and an example of late 18th century neoclassical gardens. Worth visiting to absorb its dreamlike feeling with a quiet walk throughout. The park is surrounded with forest vegetation and divided in three levels and various terraces, with an Italian touch that combines the neoclassical and romantic styles. On top is a pond with goldfish. In the middle are found small temples with domes sustained by Toscan columns, and beautiul classic marmol statues are found all over the park. At the lowest level is a labyrinth of vegetation that gives its name to the park.

Direcion: Pg Castanyers, 1, 08035 Barcelona. Closest metro is the green Line, stop Montbau.

Rent an apartment in the eixample area in Barcelona to be close to the park and the city center.

Contemporary dance shows in Barcelona

Barcelona is not short of high culture, but for those who have neither Spanish nor Catalan as a native language, going to the theatre can be tricky. This is where contemporary dance comes in. Most dance pieces use little or no language, as stories are told with the dancers’ bodies rather than with words. The good news is that Barcelona’s dance scene is an embarrassment of riches: great companies, enthusiastic young audiences and a plethora of venues, of which one of the best is the Mercat de les Flors.

For January bargain hunters, don’t forget that if shows haven’t sold out, half-price tickets can be bought in person from the Tiquet 3 box office in the Tourist Information office in Plaça Catalunya up to three hours before the start of the show.
Check out the Mercat de Flors website to view the whole program: www.mercatflors.cat

After a beautiful dance show you can stay in a cosy apartment in Barcelona.
