Calcots Barcelona BBQ season

It’s calçots season once more in Catalonia, which means a couple delicious months of barbequing green onions in the countryside.

A calçot is a sort of long green onion which is nice and fat in February and March – so right now! The tradition is to go to a masia, or country farmhouse restaurant where they char these onions by the ton on the BBQ, but you can get them sometimes also in restaurants.

The process of eating is a bit messy as Calçot eaters must first peel the onions (the outer layers are black and burned of the fire) and then dip them in red romesco sauce, which is very delicious and made of red pepers, almonds etc..

Saint Just and Pastor ’s church Barcelona Gotic area

Published by admin under What to visit in Barcelona

Sant Just Barcelona apartment for rent  sant-just-2.jpg Saint Just and Pastor’s chuch
Plaça Sant Just 6

Barcelona  08002   Metro : Jaume

From the Plaza de la Generalitat, the tourist information is on the corner,  go down carrer de la ciutat and take the first street on the left, the carrer Hercules (name from the mythical founder of Barcelona). At the end you will find this church.

This is one of the oldest churches (3rd century) in Barcelona and is dedicated to the two martyrs, Justo and Pastor, who were the subjects of veneration during the 4th century. However, much of the building is part of the later Visigothic construction. Back in the days of Ramón Berenguer ‘el Viejo’ (11th century), this parish church was used as a cathedral while the Romanesque cathedral was being built. The 14th century Gothic building work is typical of the church architecture of the time. Relics belonging to both saints are kept in a small chest from the cathedral of Narbonne donated by Jaume I’s wife.
Christian catacombs are reported to have been found beneath Plaça Sant Just. The Gothic fountain was built in 1367 by famed Barcelona councilman Joan Fiveller. Fiveller had discovered a spring in the Collserola hills and had the water piped straight to Barcelona. The fountain bears an image of St. Just and city and sovereign count-kings’ coats of arms, along with a pair of falcons. The excellent entryway and courtyard to the left of Carrer Bisbe Caçador is the Palau Moixó, the town house of an important early Barcelona family, while down Carrer Bisbe Caçador is the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres, the Catalan Arts and Letters Academy. The church is dedicated to the boy martyrs Just and Pastor; the Latin inscription over the door translates into English almost in reverse syntax as “Our pious patron is the black and beautiful Virgin, together with the sainted children Just and Pastore.”

For your stay in Barcelona , hire an apartment in the gotic area.
